TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The team of Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) students, who are part of the Student Creativity Program Karsa Cipta (PKM-KC), has developed an innovation prototype called MetaBand. The smartband device, which is based on Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) technology, is used to monitor cholesterol levels, glucose, and blood pressure in real-time. The device is integrated with a specific application that stores measurement history and includes early detection features for metabolic syndrome.

The prototype developers of MetaBand consist of students from various disciplines, namely Melsya Meira Syalsabilla and Fahra Dina Qoyyimah from Nursing, Amar Jamaludin and Naufal Nuha Fahreza from Electrical Engineering, and History student Maris Lumban Gaol. They were guided by lecturer Irkham.

Team leader Melsya Meira Syalsabilla stated that the MetaBand innovation was motivated by the high health risks faced by individuals with metabolic syndrome, especially towards heart disease and diabetes. She mentioned this via Unpad's website on Friday, October 3, 2025.

A comprehensive health monitoring system is considered essential for early detection to avoid serious complications. The team also observed that the currently available health monitoring devices do not cover all indicators of metabolic syndrome in one device, hence the initiative for MetaBand as an integrated monitoring solution based on the Internet of Things (IoT).

The development of MetaBand involved the integration of NIRS sensors, microcontrollers, and calibrated photodiodes to produce accurate measurements. The measurement results are displayed in real-time on the MetaBand screen with color indicators of green for normal, yellow for caution, and red for high. She mentioned, "This system is designed to be user-friendly while providing practical information for maintaining health."

With NIRS technology, near-infrared light is emitted onto the skin, and its reflection is captured. From this reflection, MetaBand can detect various important information, such as cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure.

To measure glucose levels, the team installed an infrared light with a wavelength of 1,550 nanometers. Meanwhile, to determine cholesterol, the light wavelength is 1,720 nanometers. As for measuring blood pressure, infrared light with a wavelength of 940 nanometers is used.

The measurement results from MetaBand will be stored in the app. Another complementary feature includes measuring triglycerides, waist circumference, body weight, and body mass index.
