TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) detected a wave of online gambling deposit transactions ahead of the 2026 World Cup, as indicated by patterns and historical analysis of gambling deposits leading up to previous major football events.
PPATK Head Ivan Yustiavandana said on Tuesday, June 16, that the country's digital payment system, QRIS is also utilized for football betting pools, "akin to general online gambling deposit activities."
Additionally, PPATK found that the number of football betting transactions exceeds those of common gambling sites, such as the casinos. Gamblers can place large bets on each World Cup match.
The watchdog also detected that online gambling operators are using nominee bank accounts, the majority of which were the result of buy-sell transactions, as a "layering" of accumulated deposit transactions through QRIS.
"Dormant accounts are no longer used," said Ivan.
According to Ivan, PPATK is working closely with the Indonesian National Police and regional police to anticipate a surge in online gambling transactions during the 2026 World Cup. Analysis results are provided proactively as well as based on police requests.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo also previously reactivated the Anti-Football Mafia Task Force as part of the efforts to curb gambling activities leading up to the world's biggest football tournament.
"To avoid the World Cup being exploited by certain groups to violate the law," Sigit told reporters at the National Police Headquarters on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
The 2026 World Cup kicked off on June 12, and will last through July 20, 2026. For the first time in history, the international football event will be attended by 48 teams.
