TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is urging Pakistan and the Afghan authorities to take the path of peace to end the armed conflict between the two countries. This call comes after reports of open warfare involving cross-border attacks reaching the Afghan capital, Kabul.
The spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela, emphasized Indonesia's call for immediate de-escalation and dialogue between the two parties.
"Indonesia hopes that both countries can resolve their issues peacefully, prioritize dialogue, and de-escalate," said Nabyl during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Friday, February 27, 2026.
Nabyl stressed that these efforts are crucial to prevent the escalation of the conflict and minimize its impact on civilians. Indonesia is also concerned about the safety of Indonesian citizens in both countries.
"We also need to ensure the safety of civilians, including Indonesian citizens in both countries," he said.
Indonesians' Situation and Embassy's Recommendation
Acting Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Abroad at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, confirmed that Indonesian citizens in Afghanistan and Pakistan are safe despite the recent armed clashes. Although the Pakistani military directed attacks towards the capital city of Kabul, Heni stated that no Indonesian citizens were affected. "All WNIs in Afghanistan are reported to be safe," she said on the same occasion.
According to Heni, the current number of Indonesians in Afghanistan is 43, with 15 of them being part of the larger Indonesian Embassy family in Kabul. The Indonesian Embassy has issued a recommendation for its citizens to increase their vigilance, limit travel outside their residence, avoid government areas and crowded places, and maintain communication with the Embassy.
On February 22, Pakistan launched airstrikes in seven areas of Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians, including women and children from both sides. According to Al Jazeera's report on Friday, Pakistani officials stated that Afghan forces had resumed attacks near the military positions close to the border.
This led Islamabad to launch airstrikes on several targets in Afghanistan, including Kabul and other cities. Pakistan's initial airstrike occurred around 01:50 local time early on Friday, with Afghan forces responding with anti-aircraft fire.
Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said, "Our cup of patience has overflowed. Now it is open war between us and you."
