Indonesia, Thailand Call for Ceasefire in Palestine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto stated that the Indonesian government and Thailand are pushing for a ceasefire in Palestine. The two countries are promoting the peace process by supporting the two-state solution.

"Promote access to humanitarian aid and reemphasize the peace process through the two-state solution," said Prabowo after meeting with the Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at the Government House, Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday, May 19, 2025, as reported by the president's communication team.

During the meeting, they also discussed the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. According to Prabowo, the Indonesian government appreciates Thailand's encouraging neighboring countries to seek peaceful solutions in Myanmar.

"We also emphasized the importance of an inclusive national dialogue for achieving peace and stability in Myanmar," he said.

In addition, the Indonesian government fully supports Thailand's efforts to become a member of BRICS. Prabowo said that Indonesia will help facilitate this matter.

During the same occasion, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated her commitment to Indonesia on the Myanmar issue.

"We have the same interests in the Myanmar issue," she said.

President Prabowo Subianto is on an official visit to Thailand on Monday, May 19, 2025.

After meeting with the Thai Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prabowo is scheduled to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which reflects the commitment of both parties to expanding their partnership. President Prabowo's official visit will conclude with a luncheon at the Government House.

President Prabowo previously expressed his readiness to evacuate civilians from Gaza who have become victims of the long conflict with Israel.

Prabowo stated that Indonesia is ready to accommodate around 1,000 Gaza residents in the first wave of humanitarian evacuation. The evacuation is temporary.

Those to be evacuated mostly consist of the wounded, orphaned children, and those who have suffered severe trauma due to Israeli military aggression.

Anwar Abbas, the Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), rejected the relocation plan. Anwar mentioned that the plan to move Palestinians out of Gaza was an idea supported by U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel. "The question remains: Why is Indonesia following suit by supporting Israel and America's plans?" Anwar said in a written statement on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

He touched on the desires of Israel and the U.S. to empty Gaza so that Israel could more freely occupy and control the territory. Therefore, according to Anwar, Israel could place its citizens in the Gaza they had occupied.
