TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed an agreement to establish the International Mangrove Research Center (IMRC) in Bali, supported through a UAE grant.

The signing took place in New York, United States, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, between Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, and Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Founding Managing Director of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.

Minister Zulkifli, known as Zulhas, described the partnership as a concrete expression of solidarity and commitment to the planet’s future.

“This is not just about signing an agreement—it is an investment in the future of our earth,” he said in an official statement.

He emphasized that the grant strengthens Indonesia’s role as a key player in global climate diplomacy, with Bali positioned as a hub for mangrove conservation research. Indonesia currently holds the world’s largest mangrove ecosystem, making it central to international efforts in ecosystem preservation and climate resilience.

“Mangroves are more than trees and ecosystems; they represent the future of our descendants. With this support, Indonesia and the UAE show that partnerships can deliver real solutions for the planet,” Zulhas added.

According to the minister, the grant comes from UAE government entities dedicated to humanitarian and public-interest initiatives, particularly environmental projects.

The funding will expand the capacity of the current research facilities in Bali, transforming them into a center of scientific innovation, knowledge exchange, and a living laboratory for replicable mangrove conservation and restoration models worldwide.

Zulhas underlined that this initiative elevates Bali beyond its reputation as a global tourist destination. “Bali will also stand as a symbol of Indonesia’s green diplomacy—where global solidarity converges to address the urgent challenge of climate change,” he said.
