TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation has once again rolled out its Free Travel Program for the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 holiday period, aiming to provide safe and affordable transport for the public during the peak travel season.
This year, the government has allocated quotas for 33,039 passengers and 5,628 motorcycles to use the service, which covers land, rail, and sea transportation.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi urged the public to register early and make full use of the program, which has been open since December 1, 2025.
“Registration is available through the website mudik.kemenhub.go.id. We hope this quota can be fully utilized and deliver real benefits to the community,” Dudy said in a statement on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
He said the free travel program is a key government initiative to ensure safe, comfortable, and affordable holiday journeys, while also encouraging people to shift from private vehicles, particularly motorcycles, to public transportation.
For this year’s program, the ministry has prepared 70 buses operating on 10 routes from Jakarta to various cities across Java. Free rail services will transport 5,568 motorcycles and 12,720 passengers, while sea transport will accommodate 17,239 passengers across 55 routes.
Departures and return trips have been scheduled around anticipated peak travel days. The Christmas and New Year exodus is expected to peak on December 24, 2025, with the return flow forecast for January 2, 2026.
Reflecting on last year’s holiday season, Dudy said 94.67 million trips were recorded during Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025, with 17.18 million people using public transportation. Traffic accidents during that period fell by nearly 14 percent.
“Shifting from private vehicles, especially motorcycles, to public transport is highly effective in reducing accidents and easing congestion,” he said.
“We want people to reunite with their families without putting themselves at risk on the road.”
Dudy also reminded travelers to prioritize safety and comply with all regulations, stressing that holiday travel should be carried out responsibly.
“Going home for the holidays is a meaningful tradition, and it must be done in a safe, secure, and orderly manner,” he said.
