TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government plans to provide economic stimulus in the form of transportation fare discounts for the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. Details of the discounts were finalized during a cross-ministerial coordination meeting held at Wisma Danantara on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
The meeting was led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto. Attending ministers and agency heads included Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Manpower Minister Yassierli, National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy, and Head of the Central Statistics Agency Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti.
Following the meeting, Airlangga announced the specific transportation fare discounts the government will offer at a press conference:
- Train: A 30% discount will be applied to fares for 1.5 million passengers from December 22, 2025, to January 10, 2026.
- Sea Transportation (PT Pelni): A 20% discount will be implemented from December 17, 2025, to January 10, 2026, targeting 405,000 passengers.
- Port Services (PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry): Discounts on port services will be effective from December 22, 2025, to January 10, 2026. This measure targets 227,000 passengers and 491,000 vehicles.
Air Travel Subsidies
The government will also provide subsidies for airplane ticket purchases from October 22, 2025, to January 10, 2026, aiming to reach 36 million passengers.
"The Value Added Tax (VAT) will be covered by the government, along with discounts on fuel charges and avtur (jet fuel) prices. This will result in a ticket price reduction ranging from 12 to 14 percent," Airlangga explained.
The transportation discounts and Government-Borne VAT (DTP) for plane tickets were not included in the broader economic package announced by Airlangga at the State Palace on September 15. The government had previously offered similar VAT discounts during the school holiday period in June-July.
