TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works (PU) has opened technical consultation services for Islamic boarding schools across the country, addressing building structure safety and compliance with permits. This step was taken in response to the collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School dormitory in Sidoarjo, East Java, which claimed the lives of dozens of students.
Public Works Minister Dody stated that consultations can be accessed through the 158 Call Center. The service is intended for boarding schools that want to quickly and easily check the condition of their buildings.
"Those who want to conduct an immediate inspection can contact the hotline, and our technical team will go directly to the location," Dody said in a written statement on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
He explained that technical inspections will be carried out by teams from the Directorate General of Spatial Planning spread across Indonesia. The state budget will cover funding for these activities, but the ministry is also opening up opportunities for collaboration with the private sector.
In addition to the hotline service, the Ministry of Public Works will conduct audits in nine provinces with the highest number of Islamic boarding schools, including East Java, Central Java, and South Sumatra. This audit will be conducted in parallel with data collection from the public.
He also pointed out that many Islamic boarding schools have not obtained Building Approval Permits (PBG). According to Dody, only 51 out of approximately 42,000 Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia have the necessary permits.
The government also announced the formation of a Special Task Force (Satgas) for Islamic boarding school buildings prior to this. The Satgas is responsible for auditing and regulating structurally vulnerable buildings. Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar announced this policy after a meeting with the Minister of Public Works on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
"We will form a task force to develop boarding schools, starting with the most vulnerable ones. The audit will be conducted by the Ministry of Public Works using data from regional governments, the public, and a prepared hotline," Muhaimin said.
He reminded managers of Islamic boarding schools to renew their PBG permits. He also requested that boarding schools without permits temporarily cease construction activities. "No matter how small the building is, it must have a permit. If there is no PBG permit, stop construction activities until one is obtained," he said.
On Monday evening, September 29, 2025, the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School dormitory collapsed while students were performing the Asr congregational prayer on the ground floor of the four-story building. According to BNPB data, the total number of fatalities reached 67 people by October 7, 2025. The joint search and rescue team also found seven body parts in the rubble.
