TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is continuing evacuation efforts at the site of the collapsed Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school (Ponpes Al Khoziny) in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia.

Head of BNPB, Suharyanto, said that search operations remain ongoing as of Friday morning, October 3, 2025.

So far, rescuers have managed to evacuate 104 survivors, while seven people have been confirmed dead. “There are still 56 people unaccounted for under the rubble,” Suharyanto told reporters on Friday morning.

On Thursday, BNPB announced that no signs of life had been detected inside the ruins, prompting the use of heavy machinery to speed up the search.

“Based on scientific monitoring, we have not found any indications of life as of this morning,” Suharyanto said on October 2.

The four-story building of Al Khoziny collapsed on Monday, September 29, while students were performing Asr prayers on the second floor, which served as a prayer hall.

The boarding school’s caretaker, Abdul Salam Mujib, explained that the building was still under renovation at the time of the incident. Earlier that day, workers had just completed concreting the roof of the third floor.

“The construction had been underway for nine months, and this was supposed to be the final concreting,” Mujib said.
