TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian mountaineer Lilie Wijayati Poegiono passed away at the Puncak Jaya, also known as the Carstensz Pyramid in Papua. This news was conveyed by journalist Andreas Harsono, Lilie's high school friend from Malang.
Lilie, 59, died alongside her high school friend Elsa Laksono. 'Their bodies are still up there,' said Andreas, when contacted by Tempo on Saturday night, March 1, 2025.
Andreas mentioned that he received the sad news of the passing of his two friends, Lilie and Elsa, from a school WhatsApp group. He did not know how many people were part of the climbing team at the peak of Mount Jaya Wijaya - the highest point in Indonesia towering at 4,820 meters above sea level. 'Looking at the photos, it seems like they were airlifted to the foot of the mountain,' Andreas said, recounting Lilie and Elsa's journey.
According to Andreas, from the school group, his two friends who were reported to have passed away were wearing T-shirts with the inscription 'Indonesia Expedition'. There is no detailed information yet regarding the cause of the two climbers' deaths.
It is still unknown which route Lilie and Elsa took. 'We are currently seeking Freeport's assistance to aid in the evacuation,' said Andreas.
Andreas also posted a tweet on X informing about the demise of Lilie and Elsa. 'Lilie Wijayati and Elsa Laksono, both 60 years old, passed away due to hypothermia at the Cartens Peak, near Timika, Papua,' wrote Andreas.
Lilie was a fashion designer in Bandung, West Java. Elsa was a dentist in Jakarta. They were alumni of SMA Dempo Malang, East Java, in 1984.
In Tempo article titled "Lilie Wijayati Menuju Tujuh Puncak Gunung Tertinggi Indonesia" (Lilie Wijayati Conquering Seven of Indonesia's Highest Peaks), Lilie had conquered six of the highest peaks in Indonesia. She was determined to climb Puncak Jaya to complete the conquest of the seven highest peaks in Indonesia. If she had reached the Carstensz Peak, Lilie would have been recorded as the oldest woman on the list of people who had conquered the seven highest peaks in Indonesia.
