TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has declared that its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States has effectively been suspended following a series of U.S. airstrikes, which Tehran says have killed at least 50 people and injured more than 500 since July 6.
According to Al Jazeera, Iran's Health Ministry released the casualty figures just hours after U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out a seventh consecutive night of strikes on targets across Iran.
The attacks reportedly also damaged civilian infrastructure, including desalination facilities, leaving around 10,000 people without access to clean water.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Washington had violated all commitments under the Islamabad MoU signed by the two countries last month.
"The US has violated and suspended all its commitments within the framework of the Islamabad MoU," Gharibabadi said on Saturday, July 18.
Gharibabadi, who participated in the technical negotiations surrounding the MoU in early July, said the Iranian government is now prioritizing national defense amid the escalating conflict.
Iran and U.S. Accuse Each Other of Violating the MoU
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei accused Washington of violating every aspect of the agreement over the past week. He stressed that Tehran does not seek war and is only acting in self-defense in what he described as a forced conflict.
Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref also argued that the United States launched attacks even before the MoU had been fully implemented. He said the agreement had entrusted Iran with responsibility for managing shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The two countries are now accusing each other of breaching Article 5 of the MoU, which guarantees the security of commercial shipping in the strategically important waterway.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump said during the NATO summit in Ankara around 10 days ago that the agreement signed in mid-June had effectively "ended" after Iran allegedly attacked a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the incident, Washington reinstated a maritime blockade on Iranian ports and revoked exemptions previously granted for Iranian oil exports.
Attacks Continue as Regional Tensions Escalate
The conflict surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continues to intensify.
Iran said the latest U.S. strikes destroyed a seawater pumping station and an electrical transformer at the Bunji desalination facility in Jask, southern Iran, further worsening the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
Tehran retaliated by launching drones and missiles toward several Gulf states allied with the United States. Kuwait temporarily closed its airspace after two power and desalination facilities were reportedly targeted. Air raid sirens also sounded once again in Bahrain, while Jordanian authorities claimed to have intercepted 10 Iranian ballistic missiles.
Meanwhile, according to Anadolu, the United States launched additional strikes early Sunday, July 19, targeting the Sirik and Hajiabad regions in Iran's Hormozgan province.
CENTCOM said the latest attacks were carried out under the orders of President Donald Trump.
In a statement posted on X, the U.S. military said the operation aimed to "reduce Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz" and to "punish Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces who attacked U.S. military personnel in Jordan."
The latest developments underscore the growing risk of a broader regional conflict, as diplomatic efforts have effectively collapsed and both Tehran and Washington continue to exchange military strikes across the Middle East.
