TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran is considering a proposal to impose transit fees on vessels passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media and a lawmaker on Thursday, in what could become a move to monetize Tehran’s growing control over one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.
According to Iran’s semi-official Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), parliament is reviewing a draft bill that would require countries using the strait for shipping, energy transport, and food supplies to pay tolls and taxes to Iran.
A member of parliament in Tehran said the proposal aims to require payment from countries benefiting from what he described as a “safe corridor” for maritime transport, energy shipments, and food supply chains.
The lawmaker said states that benefit from secure navigation through the strait should compensate Iran through transit fees and taxes.
The proposal comes amid heightened regional tensions following the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, during which Tehran has disrupted maritime transit through the strait for vessels it says are linked to its wartime adversaries and their allies.
An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Mohammad Mokhber, said a “new regime for the Strait of Hormuz” would be introduced after the war ends, allowing Tehran to impose maritime restrictions on countries that have sanctioned Iran.
“By using the strategic position of the Strait of Hormuz, we can sanction [the West] and prevent their ships from passing through this waterway,” Mokhber said on Thursday, according to Mehr news agency, as quoted by Arab News.
The Strait of Hormuz is the main maritime gateway for oil exports from the Persian Gulf and normally handles about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, making it one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints.
Any prolonged disruption or new toll regime in the strait could further rattle global energy markets, raise shipping costs, and heighten concerns over supply security as the conflict in the region continues.
