Jakarta Governor Refuses to Appoint Officials Who Reject Public Transit

15 hours ago 12

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo will not appoint provincial government officials who are unwilling to use public transportation. He made the statement ahead of the inauguration of new department heads and mayors within the Jakarta Provincial Government on Wednesday, May 7.

He emphasized that any official set to be inaugurated must use public transportation. Pramono noted that this is particularly important on Wednesdays, when Jakarta provincial government employees are required to take public transit.

According to Pramono, senior government officials must set an example by using public transportation. If any official arrives in a private vehicle for the inauguration, he said their appointment would be canceled. “I will not inaugurate someone like that,” Pramono said in Dukuh Atas, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician said he himself continues to use public transportation for daily activities, particularly on Wednesdays. “This is part of us setting an example. I myself still take public transportation,” Pramono said.

He expressed hope that the public transportation mandate would help address several of Jakarta’s persistent issues, including traffic congestion and air pollution.

Pramono is scheduled to inaugurate several officials within the Jakarta Provincial Government on Wednesday afternoon, May 7. The appointments will include administrative mayors and bureau chiefs.

The rule requiring civil servants to use public transportation on Wednesdays is outlined in Jakarta Governor’s Instruction No. 6 of 2025, signed by Pramono Anung on April 23. The regulation does not specify any sanctions for provincial government employees who fail to comply.

The instruction applies to all civil servants and employees of the Jakarta Provincial Government, including mayors, department heads, subdistrict heads, and village chiefs. The two-page document details the provisions for using public transportation every Wednesday and includes an appendix outlining reporting procedures to ensure compliance.

Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) member Neneng Hasanah has encouraged Governor Pramono to expand the public transportation mandate for civil servants. Currently, the rule requires employees to take public transit every Wednesday.

Neneng, a member of DPRD Jakarta’s Commission D, hopes Pramono will increase the frequency. “The hope is that it can be expanded, maybe to twice a week, or even three times. This would have a very positive impact on Jakarta,” she said in a written statement on Thursday, May 1.

She added that the public transportation mandate must be implemented consistently in order to produce tangible results. If continued, Neneng said, Jakarta’s traffic congestion and air pollution could be reduced. She believes the impact would be more significant if the number of mandatory public transit days were increased.
