TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta will mark its 499th anniversary on Saturday, June 27, with a series of cultural performances, concerts, and public festivities centered around the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout in Central Jakarta.
The main celebration, themed "Towards Five Centuries of Jakarta," will run from 3:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. local time and is open to the public free of charge.
Suharini Eliawati, chair of the city's 499th anniversary committee and the Jakarta Provincial Government's Assistant for Economy and Finance, said this year's celebration serves as a milestone as the Indonesian capital approaches its 500th anniversary.
"The 499th anniversary marks an important milestone as Jakarta approaches five centuries. Therefore, this year's celebration will feature various gifts for the public," Suharini said in a written statement on Friday, June 26.
To accommodate the event, a section of M.H. Thamrin Street between Sarinah and Dukuh Atas will be closed from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Concerts and Cultural Performances
The celebration will feature performances by Padi Reborn, Mahalini, Adrian Khalif, Cici Paramida, Mollucan Soul, Sania, Skarbu, and Pasming Based.
Visitors can also enjoy a multimedia spectacle featuring a lighting show, video mapping, flying LED displays, environmentally themed art installations, and the unveiling of the official logo marking Jakarta's journey toward its fifth century.
The festivities will continue on Sunday, June 28, with "Colorful Jakarta," a day-long program showcasing cultural, sports, and entertainment activities around the HI Roundabout.
The second day's attractions include PoundFit sessions, a giant balloon parade from Sarinah to the HI Roundabout, a marching band performance, a mass Nusantara dance involving around 500 performers, a collaboration between traditional Gambang Kromong music and ballet, urban theater performances, and public waste-sorting activities promoting environmental awareness.
Discounted Public Transport and Free Attractions
As part of the anniversary celebrations, fares on MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, and Transjakarta services will be reduced to just Rp1 (less than US$0.01) on June 27 and 28. The promotional fare is available to all passengers and is not limited to holders of the Jakarta Resident ID (Jakarta ID).
Residents and visitors will also enjoy free admission during the celebration period to several of Jakarta's major attractions, including Ancol Dreamland, the National Monument (Monas), Ragunan Zoo, museums operated by the Jakarta Provincial Government, as well as selected public swimming pools and sports facilities managed by the Jakarta Youth and Sports Agency.
