The Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi Asikin, has highlighted the habit of discarding food, which adds to the burden of waste collection and processing at landfills or final disposal sites (TPA).
According to Dudi, preventing food waste needs to be done comprehensively, starting from shopping planning, food storage, cooking, and serving, to repurposing leftover edible food.
Dudi stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government will strengthen food waste prevention through policy measures, behavioral shifts, and business sector innovations. The initiative aims to reduce the volume of food waste entering the waste system while easing the burden of urban waste management.
"Reducing food waste from households, restaurants, hotels, catering, and various business operations will greatly ease the burden on city waste management. These efforts must start at the source so that valuable food does not end up as trash," Dudi said in a written statement on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
He explained that the initiative also supports efforts to curb organic waste, which currently dominates Jakarta's garbage output. Jakarta generates approximately 9,059 tons of waste per day, with organic material—primarily food waste—accounting for nearly half of the total volume.
Echoing that concern, the Head of the Jakarta Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture Agency, Hasudungan A. Sidabalok, noted that food is the product of a long supply chain involving farmers, producers, distributors, traders, and consumers. Therefore, every item of food ought to be consumed responsibly rather than tossed away carelessly.
Hasudungan cited Bappenas data showing that between 23 million and 48 million tons of food are lost or wasted along the supply chain and during distribution and consumption each year. This pattern carries the potential to trigger economic losses reaching up to Rp511 trillion.
To address these challenges, the Jakarta administration is drafting a Regional Regulation on Food System Implementation. One of the substances to be regulated is the prevention and control of food waste.
"Building a sustainable food system requires the participation of all stakeholders. Every step taken to cut food waste will deliver a significant impact on food security while reducing waste across Jakarta," Hasudungan added.
