JCI and Rupiah Close Lower on Monday, What's Behind It?

5 hours ago 17

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) closed 0.98 percent weaker at 6,116.69 in today's trading on Monday, June 22, 2026. At the end of today's trading, there were 221 gaining stocks, 445 losing stocks, and 147 stagnating stocks. A total of 22.51 million shares were traded, valued at Rp13.48 trillion. Meanwhile, the transaction frequency reached 1.73 million times.

The Research Team of Phintraco Sekuritas assessed that the movement of JCI was influenced by investors who tend to adopt a wait-and-see approach ahead of the Annual Market Classification Review announcement by Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) on June 24, 2026. "In addition, several issues regarding the Law on Financial Sector Development and Strengthening (P2SK) create uncertainty in the market," they said in their analysis on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The rupiah exchange rate also closed 0.22 percent weaker at Rp17,843 per US dollar this afternoon. According to Phintraco Sekuritas, this development aligns with the trend observed in most Asian currencies.

Meanwhile, the Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, Ibrahim Assuaibi, stated that Bank Indonesia's prediction of an increase in inflation due to the adjustment of non-subsidized fuel prices influences the exchange rate development. BI also predicts that El Nino poses an increased risk of inflation.

From a global perspective, Ibrahim stated that the strengthening of the US dollar index is influenced by market sentiment that was shaken after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran of the potential for additional military action unless Iran takes steps to control the Hezbollah group operating in Lebanon.

"However, the U.S.-Iran talks ended in Switzerland, with Tehran stating they have received exemptions for oil and petrochemical exports, easing concerns about supply shortages in the global market," Ibrahim said in a written statement on Monday, June 22, 2026.
