TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 has reportedly shaken Garut Regency and Sukabumi, West Java. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the time of the tremor on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 05:30 a.m. local time.
BMKG's shake level map and citizen report noted that the tremor was felt in Sukabumi City at a II MMI scale, meaning the shaking was felt by some people and caused light hanging objects to sway.
Meanwhile, in Garut, the earthquake was felt at II-III MMI intensity, or felt by people indoors, akin to a truck passing by. "There have been no reports of building damage as a result of the earthquake thus far," said the Head of BBMKG Region II Tangerang, Hartanto, in his written statement on Tuesday.
Based on the BMKG's analysis, the earthquake's epicenter was at the coordinates 8.20 degrees South Latitude and 107.41 degrees East Longitude. The offshore quake originated from the Indonesian Ocean south of Java, located 121 kilometers southwest of Garut.
According to the BMKG, the earthquake is classified as shallow, with a depth of 12 kilometers, and was triggered by active faults. As of 05:44 a.m., there have been no aftershocks reported based on BMKG's monitoring. The public is advised to remain calm and not be affected by unverifiable rumors.
