TEMPO.COJakarta - A Magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the region of Sumenep, East Java, late Tuesday night, September 30, 2025, leaving three residents injured.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the Data, Information, and Communication Center of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), confirmed that the injured victims received treatment at the Gayam Community Health Center in Sumenep.

As of Wednesday morning, a joint team from the East Java Provincial and Sumenep District Disaster Mitigation Agencies is conducting field assessments and emergency response. Initial data records significant infrastructure damage. Initial data from this assessment noted 30 damaged houses, including four affected places of worship and one healthcare facility.

"The electricity briefly went out in the Gayam Subdistrict due to the earthquake tremor and is currently in the process of restoration," Muhari stated in a written update on Wednesday.

The earthquake, which occurred at 11:49 p.m. local time, caused widespread panic, prompting residents to rush out of their homes. Muhari reported that four aftershocks were recorded up to 12:29 a.m., with the largest measuring magnitude 4.4.

Emergency response efforts include post-earthquake monitoring, thorough damage assessment, and providing public advisories to maintain calm and vigilance.

"The Disaster Mitigation Agency has also urged residents not to believe unverifiable information and to ensure the structural safety of their buildings before resuming activities indoors," he emphasized.

The BNPB continues to monitor the situation closely and is coordinating with local governments and relevant agencies. "Official information on the earthquake response progress will be provided periodically," Muhari stated.
