TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has revealed that the Mexican cartel is among the international networks involved in supplying narcotics, psychotropic drugs, and other addictive substances circulating in Indonesia.
BNN Chief Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto said at least three major international networks are responsible for the influx of drugs into the country, including Mexico.
“The narcotics supply chain to Indonesia involves key international networks such as the Golden Triangle, Golden Crescent, and Golden Peacock,” Suyudi said in a written statement on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
The Golden Triangle, which includes Myanmar, northern Thailand, and northern Laos, primarily supplies synthetic drugs, especially methamphetamine, across Southeast Asia.
The Golden Crescent, spanning Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan, is a major source of opium and heroin.
The Golden Peacock, which covers countries in South America such as Brazil and Mexico, mainly circulates cocaine and methamphetamine.
Suyudi noted that the most recent trace of narcotics from Mexico in Indonesia was in 2024, when the BNN uncovered 27 drug networks.
One network was allegedly linked to Gregor Haas of the Sinaloa cartel based in Mexico. Distribution through these networks often involves complex international routes, including sea routes that are frequently exploited due to Indonesia’s vast archipelagic geography, as well as airports and official ports where drugs are disguised to evade detection.
Despite past links, Suyudi confirmed that no narcotics from Mexico, including from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel led by Nemesio Rubn Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, have been detected in Indonesia to date.
El Mencho was killed by the Mexican military on Sunday, February 22, 2026, during a capture operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. According to ABC News and the Mexican Department of Defense, he died while being flown to Mexico City.
CJNG, based in Jalisco, is notorious for trafficking large quantities of fentanyl and other drugs to the United States, and his death has triggered a surge of violence in the region.
