TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that artificial intelligence (AI) could be a "game changer" for the Indonesian economy.

"No single country is at the forefront of AI, so we can progress together with other countries by utilizing AI," he said in a press conference with Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Angga Raka Prabowo and Indonesian Ambassador to China and Mongolia Djauhari Oratmangun in Shanghai on Friday evening, as quoted from Antara.

Indonesia's digital economy has the potential to reach US$135 billion by 2026, and US$366 billion by 2030, which aligns with the country's proposal in the ASEAN Digital Economic Framework Agreement.

"The agreement is expected to be signed by the Philippines' chairmanship this year. This will increase the size of the digital economy from US$1 trillion in ASEAN to US$2 trillion, and Indonesia's potential will also increase from US$400 billion to US$600 billion," said Airlangga.

According to Airlangga, the development of the digital economy and AI in Indonesia is nothing new. The government has launched 'Industry 4.0' in 2018, with one of its components being artificial intelligence.

"AI has the potential to contribute up to US$400 billion in revenue to Indonesia under 'business as usual' practices by 2030. However, if implemented within the digital economy framework, this could increase to US$2 trillion," Airlangga added.

Furthermore, Indonesia's QRIS (Qualcomm Indonesia) is now a payment service available for several currencies, including those of several ASEAN countries, as well as China, Japan, and South Korea.

"With Indonesia becoming a signatory to WAICO, Indonesia is now classified as a 'founder' of the organization, giving Indonesia access to discussions on AI itself," Airlangga emphasized.

On Thursday, Coordinating Minister Airlangga represented Indonesia at the signing of the declaration establishing the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) in Shanghai.

There are 29 signatories to WAICO: China, Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Congo, Cuba, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, South Africa, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Zambia.

While in Shanghai, Airlangga also met with representatives from several Chinese companies, including Huawei, ByteDance, Unitree, Deep Robotics, and FiberHome.

"Going forward, by optimizing WAICO, we can expand opportunities for technology transfer, investment, and the development of AI research centers in Indonesia and open greater opportunities for national startups and MSMEs to increase productivity and competitiveness in the global market," Airlangga emphasized.
