Ministry: Indonesians Abroad Remain Safe as Typhoon Ragasa Batters China, Philippines

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Indonesians residing in the regions affected by Typhoon RagasaGuangdong, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, and Manilaremain safe after the typhoon wreaked havoc in several countries. 

"There have been no reports of Indonesian citizens affected by Super Typhoon Ragasa," said Judha Nugraha, the Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the ministry, in a written statement in Jakarta on Wednesday as quoted by Antara.

He mentioned that the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong, the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (KDEI) in Taipei, the Indonesian Embassy in Manila, and the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou have coordinated with local authorities as well as the Indonesian community, especially in the affected areas.

In Taiwan, the Central Emergency Operation Center (CEOC) reported a total of 14 casualties, all of whom were from Taiwan, while in Manila, Super Typhoon Ragasa has exited the city since Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, the local government has downgraded the status from T8 (level 8) to T3 (level 3) at 08:20 p.m. Hong Kong time on Wednesday. So far, there have been no reports of typhoon-related casualties in Hong Kong and Macau.

The Indonesian government continues to closely monitor the development of the emergency situation and disaster conditions due to Typhoon Ragasa.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Indonesian citizens in the areas affected by Typhoon Ragasa to up their vigilance. In emergency situations, Indonesian citizens are expected to report their conditions swiftly to local authorities and the Indonesian Representative Office hotline as follows:

Previously, it was reported that more than 1 million people had been evacuated in Guangdong, China, due to typhoon threats, according to China Central Television (CCTV) on Tuesday.

The provincial government announced the highest level of emergency status after Typhoon Ragasa blazed through, halting school, businesses, and public transportation services.

In Shenzhen, 400 thousand residents in areas predicted to be the most vulnerable to Ragasa's impact were also evacuated to safer areas.
