TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, Indonesia, erupted with a plume reaching 900 meters above the summit on Sunday morning, May 3, 2026.

"Mount Semeru erupted at 8:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with an eruption column observed at approximately 900 meters above the summit, or 4,576 meters above sea level," said Sigit Rian Alfian, an officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, in a written report received in Lumajang.

He noted that the volcanic ash column was observed to be white to gray in color and thick, drifting toward the southwest.

"The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 111 seconds," he said.

Mount Semeru's activity on Sunday during the last six hours, from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM WIB, included 18 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 mm and durations of 89-201 seconds.

Semeru also experienced one gust earthquake with an amplitude of 4 mm and a duration of 60 seconds, one harmonic earthquake with an amplitude of 10 mm and a duration of 148 seconds.

One distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 6 mm, an S-P of 53 seconds and a duration of 140 seconds.

He explained that Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert) status, with a recommendation that the public refrain from any activity in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the summit (the eruption epicenter).

"Beyond that distance, the public is advised not to engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river boundary) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the summit," he said.

The public is also prohibited from engaging in activities within a five-kilometer radius of the crater or summit of Mount Semeru Volcano due to the risk of ejected (incandescent) rocks.

He also urged residents to be aware of the potential for pyroclastic flows, lava avalanches, and magma  along the rivers and valleys that originate at the summit of Mount Semeru.

"Especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for magma in small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan," he said.
