TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that no Indonesian citizens were among the victims of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu, Philippines, on Tuesday.
"Until now, there is no information about any Indonesian citizens becoming victims of the earthquake," said Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizens' Protection at the ministry building, in Jakarta on Wednesday night, as reported by Antara.
The tremor occurred at 21:59 local time, centered in the Visayas region. Filipino authorities reported that at least 69 people died and more than 147 were injured. The earthquake also damaged buildings and infrastructure, and caused widespread power outages, especially in Bogo City and San Remigio.
Judha noted that the Indonesian Embassy in Manila had coordinated with local authorities and the Indonesian community. The embassy confirmed that one house owned by an Indonesian citizen in Bogo City was damaged, but fortunately, there were no reported casualties among Indonesians.
The Indonesian Embassy continues to monitor the situation and remains prepared to provide assistance to affected citizens.
As the Philippines is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to earthquakes, the Indonesian government urges all Indonesian citizens in the country to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities. Indonesian citizens requiring emergency assistance should promptly contact the Indonesian Embassy in Manila.
