TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT records 800 million active users per week, with more than 6 billion tokens processed through the Application Programming Interface (API) per minute, and 4 million developers using ChatGPT every week.
" AI has gone from something people play with to something people build with every day," he said at the OpenAI DevDay 2025 event in San Francisco, United States, on Monday, October 6, 2025.
These figures have drastically increased compared to ChatGPT's performance in 2023. At that time, OpenAI had two million developers and 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. The company also processed around 300 million tokens per minute in the API.
In light of this achievement, Altman also announced various updates to ChatGPT's features. OpenAI aims for the AI chatbot to make people more productive, more inventive, and learn faster, and "do whatever they're trying to do in their lives better."
OpenAI has integrated third-party applications into ChatGPT, such as Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. Users can prompt any of these applications for various purposes.
After typing the name of the targeted service, the application will appear in a pop-up form in the chat column with the chatbot, then proceed to carry out the prompt or request. An example of the prompt mentioned is, "Spotify, create a list of 10 sad Indonesian-language songs with lyrics."
Prior to connecting, ChatGPT will request user access to the desired application. In the case of the aforementioned Spotify, users can directly tap on the displayed song cover. The AI system will automatically open the Spotify application to play the song.
Altman said this cross-application service is made possible through the Apps Software Development Kit (SDK) built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), acting as the communication bridge between ChatGPT and external applications. "You get full control over the back-end logic and front-end UI," he said.
Many other applications are set to be integrated with OpenAI. Some that have already been announced include AllTrails, Doordash, Khan Academy, Instacart, Peloton, OpenTable, Target, TheFork, Tripadvisor, Thumbtack, and Uber.
New Features of AI Agents
Altman recently introduced AgentKit, a set of features to build, manage, and optimize AI agents. One of the features is Agent Builder, which is a visual canvas for designing multi-agent flows with drag-and-drop.
There is also Connector Registry, a central panel to connect various tools and databases, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Teams, and others. OpenAI also provides ChatKit, a tool to embed UI chat agents into applications and websites.
Other services introduced include New Evals, datasets, trace grading, automatic prompt optimization, support for third-party models. Then there is Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT), custom reasoning model like in o4-mini. This feature accelerates the creation of AI agents from months to just hours.
As for Codex, the GPT-5-Codex-based coding agent is also now publicly available. Its new features range from App for Slack to work on coding tasks; then Codex SDK, which brings Codex agents with structured outputs; and Admin Tools to control work environment, reviews, and analysis dashboards.
"Nearly every OpenAI PR goes through a Codex review," said Altman.
