Pakistan Says Trump's Gaza Peace Proposal Differs from Muslim Countries' Suggestion

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, on Friday, as reported by CNA, stated that the peace proposal consisting of 20 points announced by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week to end the Israeli genocide in Gaza is not in line with the plan proposed by a group of Muslim-majority countries.

The group had proposed a complete withdrawal of Israel from Gaza in a meeting with Trump on September 22. While Trump's plan only offers a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces to facilitate the release of remaining hostages held by Palestinian fighters, Hamas.

"I have made it clear that these 20 points which Trump has made public are ... not the same as ours. I say that some changes have been made in it, in the draft we had," Dar said in his address to Pakistani parliament members.

Dar's statement corresponds with a report by Middle East Eye this week, which stated that Trump's 20-point peace plan differs from the initial draft submitted to Middle Eastern leaders and Muslim countries.

Trump's latest proposal heavily accommodates Israel's desires. However, in front of the Israeli public, PM Benjamin Netanyahu is still attempting to violate several points of the agreement, particularly the withdrawal of forces from Gaza.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had previously welcomed Trump's plan. During transit, Sharif publicly responded to Trump's posts on social media, Dar said.

On Monday, Trump released a blueprint consisting of 20 points to end the war between Israel and Hamas. It includes the return of all hostages, both alive and deceased, within 72 hours of a ceasefire. The plan refers to a "New Gaza" to be rebuilt in the future.

The plan leaves many details to be negotiated and depends on Hamas' acceptance.

More than 1,200 people were killed in an attack on October 7, 2023, in Israel, including those killed by Israeli military attacks. According to Israel's count, Hamas also holds 251 hostages. The subsequent Israeli genocide in Gaza has killed over 66,200 Palestinian citizens, mostly women and children, and destroyed the small enclave, according to Gaza health authorities.

Trump announced his plan a week after meeting with the leaders of eight Muslim countries—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan—to discuss the situation in Gaza.

The Trump administration seeks the agreement of Arab and Muslim countries to send military forces to Gaza to enable the withdrawal of Israeli forces and secure funding for transition programs and reconstruction, as reported by Axios.

Israel's Full Withdrawal

Dar stated that the eight countries received a commitment from Trump that he would not allow Israel's annexation of the occupied West Bank, which has been advocated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing coalition allies.

A consensus draft prepared by the Muslim countries calls for "Israel's full withdrawal" and "a pathway to fair peace based on a two-state solution" for the Israel-Palestine conflict, Dar said, reading a copy of their proposal.

The establishment of a Palestinian state living alongside Israel is Pakistan's policy, he said. Netanyahu has repeatedly sidelined Palestinian statehood, stating that it would endanger Israel.

Trump's plan states that all military operations will be suspended, and the frontlines in Gaza will be frozen until the requirements for a "full phased withdrawal" of Israeli forces are fulfilled.

Hamas must disarm according to Trump's plan, and on Tuesday, it gave the group three to four days to accept it.

The plan envisions a "Peace Council" consisting of international monitors led by Trump himself and involving former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in an undefined role. Blair's role has drawn international public outcry due to his involvement in the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, which resulted in the deaths of at least one million people.

Gaza will have an interim governance and transition consisting of a "technocratic and apolitical" committee comprising Palestinian citizens and international experts.
