TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 69 people have been confirmed dead and nearly 150 others injured after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cebu, central Philippines. According to Al Jazeera on Wednesday, October 1, this figure sharply increased from the initial report by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, which recorded 26 fatalities. The number of casualties is expected to rise.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded an earthquake that occurred at 9:59 p.m. local time on Tuesday at the northern tip of Cebu Island, near the city of Bogo, which has a population of about 90,000. After the initial tremor, the area experienced four aftershocks measuring above 5.
According to TRT Global, the injured victims flooded hospitals, overflowing into the streets. Children and adults were treated on emergency beds set up under blue tents in the courtyard of the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo. Patients were relocated outside as hundreds of aftershocks rattled the area throughout the night.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing. With the help of tracking dogs and heavy equipment, the military, police, and volunteers have been deployed. "We’re still in the golden hour of our search and rescue. There are still many reports of people who were pinned or hit by debris," said Deputy Administrator of the Civil Defense Office, Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, at a press conference. Alejandro added that they continue to receive additional reports of fatalities.
Richard Guion, 39, a resident, recounted how he and his wife, who suffered a broken leg, managed to pull their 17-year-old son from the rubble of a concrete wall that collapsed. "When the cement collapsed, I called out to him," said Guion, his left arm bandaged.
According to local media cited by Al Jazeera, the local government has declared a state of emergency in several areas of Cebu. The earthquake caused power outages and the collapse of several buildings. The Cebu Provincial Government urged residents to remain outside and keep monitoring official information as aftershocks continue to occur.
