TEMPO.COJakarta - The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Probolinggo Police has successfully uncovered the case of missing luggage belonging to a Thai tourist at the Mount Bromo tourist destination. Three individuals have been apprehended and named suspects in the aggravated theft case.

The three suspects are identified as AR, 34, who acted as the executor; ES, 46, the alleged mastermind; and NF, 45, who was reportedly involved in the planning and the disposal of evidence. Suspect AR was taken into custody on February 21, 2026, in Kedopok, Probolinggo.

During interrogation, AR confessed to carrying out the theft under the instructions of ES. "Subsequently, officers apprehended ES and his wife, NF, at their residence in the Pesona Graha Kencana Housing Complex, Probolinggo," stated Probolinggo Police Chief Commissioner M. Wahyudin Latif on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

Latif noted that police have seized several pieces of evidence, including a Toyota Avanza Veloz used in the commission of the crime, the perpetrators' clothing, and the victim's luggage, which had been discarded in a river. The resolution of this case, Latif added, reflects the commitment of the Probolinggo and East Java Regional Police to ensuring security within tourist zones.

"We assure you that every report will be handled professionally. The security of tourists, both domestic and foreign, remains our priority," Latif declared.

For their actions, suspect AR is charged under Article 477 paragraph 1 letter f of Law Number 1 of 2023 of the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum prison sentence of seven years. Meanwhile, ES and NF are charged under Article 20 letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023 for their involvement in the criminal activity.

The victim of the aggravated theft, identified by the initials MKJ, is a 54-year-old Thai national who lost three bags and three suitcases while visiting Bromo on Sunday, February 15, 2026. As a result of the incident, the victim suffered financial losses totaling Rp108,368,200.

The incident began when the victim and a group arrived in Surabaya on February 14, 2026, for a sightseeing tour. After visiting several destinations, the victim stayed in Probolinggo before heading to Bromo in the early hours aboard a Hiace vehicle.

Upon arriving at Pendopo Agung Ngadisari, the victim and the group transferred from the Hiace to a Jeep to enter the Bromo area, leaving the bags and suitcases inside the Hiace. The theft occurred in a parking area at the entrance to Wonotoro Village, bordering Ngadisari Village in the Sukapura District of Probolinggo Regency.

The modus operandi involved damaging the door lock of the victim's Hiace vehicle to gain access to the items inside.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., upon returning from Bromo, the victim discovered that the front right door lock of the vehicle had been compromised and the door was unlocked. "After checking, it was discovered that three bags and three suitcases belonging to the victim, along with their contents, were missing. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the Probolinggo Police," Latif stated.
