TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The condition of Pope Francis, age 88, is reportedly improving after spending the night in hospital with a respiratory infection. ANSA news agency reported on Saturday, February 15, 2025, that the Pope had a peaceful night and his fever had gone.

Pope Francis has been suffering from bronchitis for more than a week. On Friday morning, February 14, 2025, he was taken to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy, for further treatment.

"There is optimism about the new therapy that began yesterday," ANSA reported.

The Vatican reported on Friday afternoon, February 14, 2025, that the world's Catholic leader had undergone a series of health checks, including a respiratory test that turned out to indicate an infection. The Vatican had not provided any further information on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Pope Francis has been the world's Catholic leader since 2013. In the past two years, he has often had the flu and other health problems. As a young man, he suffered from pleurisy and had one of his lungs removed. Pope Francis has recently been particularly susceptible to lung infections.

Pope Francis has been suffering from respiratory problems since mid-December 2024. At several events in January and February, he asked his aides to read his speeches in person.

The Gemelli Hospital is Rome's largest hospital with a special ward for the Pope. The Pope spent nine days there in June 2023 while undergoing surgery for a hernia. His medical team decided that surgery was necessary because the condition was causing a painful intestinal blockage.

Pope Francis had previously undergone a six-hour operation in July 2021 to remove 33 cm (13 inches) of intestine to treat a painful intestinal condition called diverticulitis. He said in 2023 that he was recovering.

In an interview with Reuters in 2022, the team of doctors dismissed rumors that cancer had been found during surgery in 2021. The surgeon who operated on him has confirmed that there was no cancer.
