TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - When planning a vacation, Gen Z often favors spontaneity, according to a recent study. The process of coordinating schedules, managing finances, and agreeing on destinations within a group can be challenging. Consequently, many younger people are forgoing group trips and traveling alone. A recent study by easyJet, which observed this shift, indicates that over half of the British population (57%) is now considering solo travel.
Paul Bixby, Chief Commercial Officer at easyJet Holidays, noted that the study reveals a significant change in how people choose to travel. "More Brits than ever are opting for package holidays because of their convenience and reliability, but we’re seeing generational habits vary more than ever – from early planners to spontaneous adventurers," he stated, as reported by Express.
While the trend of spontaneous travel may have originated with Gen X, it has been embraced by both millennials and Gen Z. According to the study, the primary motivations for booking solo trips are cost efficiency (60%), ease of booking (56%), and the peace of mind (38%) that comes with individual planning.
Solo travel has become particularly popular among the younger generation, who view it as an opportunity for both personal growth and relaxation. This trend is not limited to city breaks; hotels are now a common way for young travelers to connect with new people for adventures in locations ranging from Southeast Asia to South America and Europe. This has made visiting more exotic destinations more accessible and affordable.
The findings from easyJet also suggest a correlation between age and planning time. The younger you are, the sooner you tend to book your next trip. Data shows that Gen Z typically books 11.5 weeks in advance, while millennials book three months ahead, Gen X five months ahead, and Baby Boomers four months in advance.
