Shift to Subsidized Fuel Triggers Long Lines at Indonesian Gas Stations

9 hours ago 22

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) stated that increased consumption of subsidized fuel has led to long lines at gas stations. "There has been a shift, a change in the purchasing pattern of non-subsidized fuel, with many switching to subsidized fuel," said Head of BPH Migas Wahyudi Anas during a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission XII on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

Data from BPH Migas shows that the distribution of diesel has reached 9.48 million kiloliters, which means that approximately 50.85 percent of the quota for this year, 18.64 million kiloliters, has been distributed.

As for kerosene, 48.91 percent of the designated quota of 0.53 million kiloliters has been distributed, or around 0.26 million kiloliters. Meanwhile, the distribution of Pertalite Ron 90 has reached 13.96 million kiloliters, equivalent to 47.68 percent of the quota of 29.27 million kiloliters.

The government previously raised the price of non-subsidized fuel on June 10, 2026. The price of Pertamax RON 92 increased from Rp12,300 to Rp16,250 per liter, while Pertamax Green 95 increased from Rp12,900 to Rp17,000 per liter.

Wahyudi stated that the increase in diesel fuel distribution occurred after the government raised the prices of other fuel types such as Dex Series and Pertamax. Wahyudi believes that this price hike has led people to switch to subsidized fuel.

Similarly, Vice President Director of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Taufik Aditiyawarman, mentioned that the queues in Sumatra were also affected by delays in distribution to retailers. He expressed apologies for the inconvenience experienced by the public.

Regarding the long queues in Sumatra, Taufik stated that Pertamina Patra Niaga will continue to increase supply and adjust the distribution pattern by adding more fleets. Additionally, the company will extend the operational hours of gas stations and increase the distribution from the depot.

As of Thursday morning, July 16, 2026, Taufik mentioned that the total supply of fuel and LPG reached 3.61 million kiloliters. Based on the supply and demand projection, Taufik stated that Pertamina Patra Niaga can still meet consumer needs.
