TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Southwest Maluku late Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Initial information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the tremor occurring at 10:49 p.m. local time had a magnitude of 6.1.
In an explanation shared by the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, the earthquake's epicenter was offshore, 85 kilometers northeast of Southwest Maluku, at 176 kilometers depth.
"The earthquake was a moderate type triggered by deformity activity within the Banda Sea Plate," Daryono explained.
BMKG's modeling results indicated that no tsunami threat was caused by the tremor.
In Taikur region, the Southwest Maluku capital, the shaking was felt at III MMI, meaning many people felt it indoors, akin to a truck passing by.
BMKG revealed that they had not received any reports of damage caused by the earthquake. No aftershocks had been recorded.
Sumenep Earthquake Felt at V-VI MMI on Sapudi Island
Meanwhile, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Sumenep, East Java, on Tuesday night, was recorded by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to have caused damage to at least 30 buildings. The offshore earthquake struck 58 kilometers southeast of Sumenep, with a depth of 12 kilometers.
The tremors from the active fault activities at that time were estimated to reach a scale of V-VI MMI on Sapudi Island. While in Sumenep, Pamekasan, and Surabaya, the intensity was III-IV MMI.
The earthquake also caused three residents in Sumenep to suffer injuries from shards of glass from cracked and collapsed houses. "They have received medical treatment," said the Head of the Sumenep District BPBD Achmad Laily Maulidi to Antara.
