TNI Pauses Military Exercise in Pasuruan over Stray Bullets

11 hours ago 23

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Public Affairs at the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Headquarters, Brigadier General Muhammad Nas, stated that the military has halted training exercises in Alastlogo Village, Lekok District, Pasuruan Regency, East Java. The decision was made after Alastlogo residents staged protests over recurring stray bullets. The stray rounds have raised safety concerns across the community.

"This issue has been addressed by the Command of Doctrine, Education, and Training of the Indonesian Navy," Nas said when confirmed on Friday, July 24, 2026.

As of Thursday, July 23, 2026, the Marine Training Command in Lekok District has temporarily suspended exercise activities, including live-fire shooting drills for soldiers. "We continue to seek the best solution, including engaging in dialogue with the residents," Nas stated.

Alastlogo villagers staged a demonstration to denounce the military exercises conducted by the Navy Marines. These activities have repeatedly resulted in stray bullets entering residential areas.

Director of the Legal Aid Institute (LBH) in Surabaya, Habibus Shalihin, stated that residents had reported the recurring stray bullet incidents to his organization. In one instance on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, residents found three spent bullet casings near their homes. A similar situation occurred the following day, with more bullet casings discovered as remnants of the military drills.

Habibus noted that these incidents have gripped Alastlogo residents with fear, culminating in a protest that blocked the North Coast Road to urge concrete government action against threats to their safety. LBH Surabaya urged the TNI Commander and the Navy Chief to temporarily suspend all military exercises, particularly live-fire drills, and provide psychological support for the trauma experienced by residents.

"We also urge an independent, accountable, and transparent investigation, and should any violations be found, legal and administrative accountability must be pursued openly before the public," Habibus stated on Friday.
