The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. 2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Indonesia vs. Saudi Arabia Match Prediction
The Indonesian National Team will face Saudi Arabia in the opening match of Group B in the Fourth Round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers for the Asian zone. The crucial match will kick off at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 00:15 WIB and will be broadcast live by RCTI and Vision+.
Indonesia enters this round after a solid, yet ultimately insufficient, performance in the third round of Asian zone qualification, where they recorded three wins, three draws, and four losses out of 10 matches. With 12 points, they finished fourth, seven points behind Australia, which secured the second qualification spot.
Only the first-ranked team in Group B will automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The second-ranked team will advance to the fifth round of qualification, while the third-ranked team will be eliminated. The match against Saudi Arabia is therefore a crucial stepping stone for Indonesia, which aims to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time in history.
2. World Bank Highlights One in Seven People in China and Indonesia Are Unemployed
Head of the World Bank for East Asia and Pacific, Aaditya Mattoo, highlighted the significant challenges faced by the younger generation in obtaining decent jobs, despite the relatively high employment rates in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region.
In its latest report, the East Asia and Pacific Economic Update released on Tuesday, October 7th, 2025, the World Bank noted that most countries in the region have high employment rates, indicating a large percentage of the working-age population being employed.
However, according to Aaditya Mattoo, the Chief Economist of the World Bank for East Asia and Pacific, the main challenge is faced by the younger generation. "The problem is that young people are struggling to find jobs, especially in countries like China and Indonesia, where one in seven people is unemployed," he said in a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 7th, 2025, as quoted from Antara.
3. EU to Double Steel Tariffs Amid Influx of Chinese Imports
The EU on Tuesday announced it was planning to double tariffs on foreign steel and halve the volume allowed into the bloc before duties are imposed.
The unveiling of the proposals by industry commissioner Stephane Sejourne comes as Europe's steel sector struggles to contend with competition from China, which dwarves the bloc's production.
The proposed EU move comes after US President Donald Trump also imposed 50% tariffs to keep out cheap metal imports from the Asian giant.
