TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States (US) Donald Trump was reported safe after a security incident disrupted the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington DC, on Saturday night, prompting an emergency evacuation of attendees.
As reported by AP and cited by MyNorthWest, the incident occurred at the Washington Hilton, where hundreds of journalists, celebrities, and government officials had gathered for the high-profile event. Panic erupted after what witnesses described as multiple gunshots, with some attendees reporting hearing between five to eight shots. Guests were seen ducking under tables as security personnel rushed into the banquet hall.
According to a report by CNN, Secret Service agents quickly escorted Trump off the stage after shouting “shots fired.” Vice President JD Vance and several Cabinet members were also evacuated from the venue.
A law enforcement official confirmed that a shooter had opened fire, though details about the suspect and motive were not immediately disclosed. Pool reports cited by CNN indicated that one suspect was later taken into custody, although authorities have yet to release further information.
Despite the chaos, officials confirmed there were no immediate reports of injuries. An administration official told CNN that both Trump and Cabinet members were safe following the incident.
The event, traditionally attended by top political figures and media representatives, was brought to an abrupt halt as members of the United States Secret Service and National Guard secured the area. Attendees were evacuated and prevented from re-entering the building as security operations continued.
Among those present at the time were Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Authorities have not yet provided a full account of the incident, and investigations remain ongoing.
