TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran will begin Monday after he called off planned “massive” strikes against Tehran.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said talks with Iran would start Monday afternoon, although he did not reveal the location or participants involved.
“Now what we’re doing is we’re talking to them in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon,” Trump said, as quoted by CNBC.
Trump said he canceled the planned military operation after receiving requests from Iran and key U.S. allies in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, to give diplomacy more space.
“We were all set to go,” Trump said, as cited by BBC. “The reason they asked is they think there’s a deal. There’s a deal on Hormuz, and there will be a deal on the nuclear.”
Trump Says Hormuz, Nuclear Deal Could Be Within Reach
In a post on his Truth Social platform late Saturday, as reported by CNA, Trump said Iran and other Middle Eastern countries had asked for additional time to finalize an agreement that would lead to the “immediate, complete and total” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
However, Trump urged Tehran to move quickly toward an agreement, saying Iran must “rapidly make a DEAL.”
When asked whether he had set a deadline for Iran to reach an agreement, Trump declined to provide a timeline.
“Would I rather make a deal? I’m not looking to kill people because people die, a lot of people die, and we don’t want that,” Trump said.
Trump said Saudi Arabia and other Gulf partners believed a diplomatic settlement was close, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets, previously carried around 20 percent of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Traffic through the waterway has declined sharply during the conflict as shipping risks increased.
Iran has yet to directly respond to Trump’s remarks. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency rejected Trump’s claim that Tehran had asked Washington to delay military action, calling the statement “nothing but a new lie.”
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations with Oman over a potential arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz were progressing toward finalization, according to Iranian media.
Oil Prices Fall After Diplomatic Signals
Global oil prices declined in Asian trading on Monday following Trump’s announcement, as markets reacted to signs of a possible de-escalation.
Brent crude fell around 4.5 percent to about US$83.98 per barrel, while U.S. crude dropped roughly 4.6 percent to US$80.74 per barrel.
Energy markets have remained volatile since the conflict began on February 28, with traders closely monitoring disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the diplomatic developments, maritime risks remain. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an incident near Khasab, Oman, at the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz, after a tanker reported an explosion near the vessel.
The ship and crew were safe, while authorities continued investigating.
