Trump Signs Interim Agreement to End Iran War

4 hours ago 20

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he had signed an interim agreement with Iran to extend the ceasefire between the two countries for another 60 days, paving the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the start of negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program.

Speaking as he left the Palace of Versailles after attending a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump confirmed that the agreement had been signed.

"It's signed," Trump told reporters. "I signed it in Versailles. Just signed it."

The White House later confirmed that Trump signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict with Iran while at Versailles, although no cameras were present during the signing.

As reported by multiple international media outlets and cited by DW, the interim agreement is expected to serve as the foundation for broader diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran following weeks of heightened tensions and military confrontation.

Iran also confirmed the signing of the agreement. State news agency IRNA quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei as saying that the text of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding had been finalized and signed by both presidents.

"The text of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was finalized with the signatures of the presidents — now it is time to test the implementation of the agreement," Baqaei said.

According to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who acted as a key intermediary in the negotiations, the agreement entered into force immediately after being signed by both parties.

In a statement posted on X, Sharif said Iran would immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the United States would lift its naval blockade as the first steps under the agreement.

He added that a formal signing ceremony is still scheduled to take place on Friday.

Sharif said both governments had endorsed Pakistan's mediation efforts, helping secure an arrangement designed to preserve the ceasefire and create conditions for future negotiations.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to ease concerns in global energy markets. The strategic waterway is one of the world's most important shipping routes for oil and gas exports.

The agreement also opens a new phase of diplomatic engagement focused on Iran's nuclear program, a longstanding source of tension between Tehran and Washington.

The signing at Versailles carries symbolic significance. The French palace has hosted numerous historic agreements ending wars and territorial disputes over the centuries.

Among the most notable was the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, which formally ended World War I. Historians have long debated whether the treaty's harsh terms on Germany contributed to the conditions that later led to World War II.

With the ceasefire now extended and implementation measures underway, attention will turn to whether both sides follow through on their commitments and whether the agreement can lead to a broader and more durable settlement.
