TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A prolonged heat wave across the United Kingdom is expected to experience a brief interruption this weekend, though dry conditions are forecast to persist, according to national weather reports.
The BBC reports that cooler northerly winds will lower temperatures by several degrees, particularly across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. However, much of the country will remain warmer than average. This includes southern England, where temperatures have already met or exceeded the official heat wave threshold for 12 consecutive days.
This brief temperature drop will bring little relief to the region's parched soils. The BBC notes that high pressure will keep the weather dry and sunny, with places like Wisley in Surrey and Herstmonceux in East Sussex approaching 30 days without rainfall. The ongoing dry spell and high demand for water have already triggered hosepipe bans for over eight million households in England.
While temperatures are expected to bounce back quickly after the weekend—with southern England potentially climbing back to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit)—a much sharper shift is predicted for the end of the month.
According to an Express.co.uk report citing weather maps from forecaster WXCharts, temperatures are projected to peak near 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) around July 25. However, this heat is expected to dissipate rapidly. Within a 48-hour period, temperatures could plunge by as much as 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit), bringing below-average temperatures to the majority of the UK by July 29.
For the end of July and into August, the Met Office indicates a transition to more unstable weather, with the potential for rain, showers, and thunderstorms, particularly in the north.
These volatile shifts arrive alongside warnings from climate scientists. In its climate report, the Met Office warned that "climate extremes are becoming the new normal" in the UK. The agency's data shows that the hottest day of the year in southern England is now typically 4.5 degrees Celsius warmer than it was during the 1961–1990 period, indicating that northern areas are increasingly experiencing high temperatures previously confined to the south.
Mike Kendon, a climate information scientist with the Met Office, emphasized that these rising temperatures are part of a rapid, long-term trend.
"2025 was the UK’s warmest year on record, the sixth time this record has been broken in the 21st Century so far," Kendon said. "The last four years are all in the top five warmest years. With warming at around 0.25°C per decade since the 1980s, it seems likely this record will be broken again in a matter of years."
