TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US embassies worldwide have announced the suspension of regular updates on their social media platforms on Wednesday following the government shutdown, as reported by Sputnik and cited by Antara.

The announcement said the platforms "will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information," and was uploaded by the US diplomatic missions in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Despite the social media shutdown, the embassies ensured that passport and transit visa services would continue "as the situation permits."

In Europe, affected embassies include those in Austria, Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, UK, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Poland, Romania, North Macedonia, Slovakia, Finland, France, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Sweden, and Estonia.

In the Middle East and Africa, embassies in Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Burundi, and South Africa are affected by the government shutdown. Likewise, embassies in Asian countries such as India, Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Japan are also suspending social media updates.

The US embassies in Cuba and El Salvador in Latin America, as well as in Australia, have followed similar steps.

The US government entered the shutdown period at midnight on October 1, after Congress failed to agree on a funding bill at the last minute.

President Donald Trump blamed the Democratic Party for the shutdown and threatened to use the shutdown to trim federal staff and reduce payments to eliminate programs opposed by the Republican Party.
