US Government Shutdown Begins; Trump Threatens to Fire Employees

TEMPO.COJakarta - The US government officially shut down on Wednesday morning after Congress and the White House failed to reach an agreement to extend federal funding by the deadline on Tuesday night. As reported by NBC, the Republican Party, which supports President Donald Trump, controls both chambers of Congress, but they still need support from Democrats to pass bills in the Senate, which requires a 60-vote threshold.

Both parties failed to agree on a bipartisan bill. The Senate rejected the Republican Party's proposal, and the Democrats' counter-proposal came only a few hours before the government shutdown deadline. This is the first government shutdown since 2018, during Trump's first term, which lasted for 34 days, extending into early 2019.

It is unclear how this will be resolved, as both sides are currently at odds on how to resolve the deadlock. During the government shutdown, most federal employees will not be paid, while members of Congress and President Trump will continue to receive their salaries.

Around 750,000 employees are expected to be furloughed each day, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Other employees working in essential jobs, such as Transportation Security Administration agents, air traffic controllers, federal law enforcement officers, and military members, will be forced to work without pay.

Under federal law, they are all scheduled to receive back pay once the government reopens, covering the period when some of them were not working. The CBO estimates that this compensation for furloughed workers will cost taxpayers an estimated US$400 million.

National parks will remain partially open during the shutdown. Medicare and Social Security benefits will not change, as they are not subject to annual funding processes, though new applicants may face delays due to employees being on leave.

This dispute comes after months of political warfare between the two parties. The Democratic Party demands provisions to extend healthcare funding, especially Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire and would raise public insurance premiums at the end of this year. They also seek assurances that Trump will not continue to unilaterally withhold Congress-directed funds.

As reported by Al Jazeera, the White House criticized the Democratic Party for the government shutdown. "Democrats Have Shut Down the Government," read a page on the White House website, displayed below a government shutdown clock showing the number zero.

US President Donald Trump threatened to purge Democrats from the US federal workforce during the government shutdown. "The Democrats want to shut it down, well when you shut it down, you have to do layoffs. So we’d be laying off a lot of people who are going to be very affected. They’re going to be Democrats," Trump said on Tuesday.

"We’re doing well as a country, so the last thing we want to do is shut it down, but a lot of good can come from shutdowns. We can get rid of a lot of things that we didn’t want, and they’d be Democrat things," Trump added.
