TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The support of Americans for Israel has significantly declined over the past two years, with an increasing number of respondents expressing strong negative views towards Israel's genocide in Gaza. This was revealed in a new poll by The New York Times and Siena University, reported by Arab News on Tuesday.
This indicates a significant shift in public opinion in the U.S., which is Israel's most important ally, and where support for the Zionist state has been enjoyed for decades through bipartisan support.
For the first time since 1998, when The New York Times began surveying respondents about their views on the long-standing conflict, the proportion of respondents expressing support for Palestine is slightly higher than for Israel.
In a similar poll shortly after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, 47 percent of American voters expressed support for Israel, while 20 percent sided with Palestine.
Almost two years later, the situation has changed: only 34 percent of the 1,313 registered respondents surveyed now support Israel, and 35 percent support Palestine. The rest have not made a decision or support both sides equally.
The survey also found that 60 percent of respondents believe Israel should end its military campaign in Gaza, even if Israeli hostages are not released or Hamas is not wiped out. Forty percent of respondents believe Israel intentionally killed Palestinian civilians in Gaza, almost double the percentage in 2023.
A majority of U.S. respondents now also oppose additional economic and military aid to Israel, a significant change in opinion since the October 7 attack.
Specifically, younger respondents, regardless of their political affiliation, tend not to support such aid, with nearly 70 percent under the age of 30 opposing any additional aid.
Since its establishment in 1948, the State of Israel has received hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S. foreign aid, making it the largest aid recipient.
A significant shift in American public opinion about Israel and Palestine has occurred, driven by a substantial decrease in Democratic voter support for Israel. Support for the Republican Party largely remained unchanged, only experiencing slight declines, according to the poll.
Across the U.S., 54 percent of Democratic voters are more sympathetic towards Palestine, while only 13 percent express greater empathy towards Israel. In 2023, 34 percent were sympathetic towards Israel and 31 percent towards Palestine.
Over 80 percent of Democratic respondents believe Israel should cease its genocide in Gaza, although its stated goals have not been achieved. Nearly 60 percent believe Israel deliberately targeted Palestinian civilians, doubling the percentage who believed so in 2023.
Support for Israel among Republican voters has slightly decreased, from 76 percent in 2023 to 64 percent.
Approximately 70 percent of Republican voters support additional aid for Israel; 47 percent believe that the Israeli military has taken adequate precautions to prevent civilian casualties, and the majority say Israel's military campaign should continue until all hostages are released, regardless of civilian casualties.
