TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China's Foreign Ministry responded to the US's deal to sell F-35 fighter jets to India by saying that the Asia Pacific region is not a geopolitical playground. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun, on Friday, February 14, 2025, emphasized that China is not a troublemaker in inter-state relations, or a country that seeks to trigger bloc politics and confrontation.
"The Asia-Pacific is a shining example of peace and development, not a geopolitical playground," Guo said.
After meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump said his government would increase sales of military equipment to India starting in 2025, including F-35 fighter jets. The sale of fighter jets such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 is a government-to-government transaction in which the Pentagon (US Department of Defense) acts as an intermediary between US defense contractors and other countries.
"Uniting to form an exclusive group and engaging in bloc politics and confrontation will not create security, and will not at all maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific and the entire world," Guo said.
Since 2008, India has reportedly agreed to buy more than $20 billion worth of US defense products. Last year, India agreed to buy 31 MQ-9B SeaGuardian and SkyGuardian drones.
For decades, Russia has been India's main arms supplier, and Russian fighter jets are part of the Indian military fleet. However, Russia's ability to export weapons in recent years has been hampered by the Ukrainian war, causing India to shift purchases to other countries.
The sales agreement reflects India's increasingly close defense ties with the US and underscores the role of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), an alliance in the Indo-Pacific consisting of the US, India, Australia and Japan. Trump said India agreed to import more oil and gas from the US to reduce the trade deficit between the two countries. He also said the two countries were working together to counter the threat of terrorism.
