TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, or UNGA, has concluded in New York, United States. World leaders gathered, with one of the focuses revolving around the Gaza genocide and the recognition of the state of Palestine.

Israel faced increased isolation as speakers condemned the ongoing war in Gaza one after another. Delegations from various countries staged a walkout when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the stage. Many diplomats left the room in protest during his speech.

Here are significant quotes from world leaders regarding Israel's actions in Gaza as reported by Al Jazeera:

UN Secretary-General
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the war in Gaza as unlike any conflict he had witnessed during his tenure. He referenced the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision ordering Israel to prevent genocide, allow investigations, and open broader humanitarian access.

Brazil
As per tradition, Brazil has always been the first country to address the session, a practice initiated in 1955 when the nation voluntarily opened the debate. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described Palestine as the most significant example of the use of disproportionate and illegal force. He warned that the Palestinian people are at risk of disappearing unless they achieve a fully integrated independent state within the international community.

United States
In a nearly hour-long speech, US President Donald Trump disregarded the role of the UN. He criticized immigration and climate policies, praised the US military strength, and attacked European allies for national setbacks.

Regarding Palestine, he demanded the immediate release of all captives and warned that unilateral recognition of the Palestinian state would be a reward to Hamas for its dreadful cruelty.

Indonesia
President Prabowo Subianto conveyed to the UN General Assembly that Indonesia is prepared to deploy 20,000 peacekeeping troops to Gaza if needed. He also expressed readiness to deploy these peacekeeping forces to other countries including Ukraine. He urged the UN not to remain silent, reminding the delegates that the organization exists to defend both the strong and the weak.

Turkey
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan began his speech by criticizing Washington for denying visas to Palestinian Authority (PA) officials, including President Mahmoud Abbas, in violation of the UN host agreement.

Erdogan dedicated most of his speech to the war in Israel and Gaza, displaying photos of women waiting for food and a severely malnourished child to the delegates. "Can we possibly have a reasonable reason for this brutality in 2025?" he asked, referring to the situation as one of the darkest moments in human history.

He demanded an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian aid, and accountability for those committing genocide.

France
Following France's decision earlier this week to officially recognize the state of Palestine, President Emmanuel Macron urged more countries to follow suit for the sake of peace. He stated that the 80th anniversary of the UN should be a moment of renewal.

Macron supported the New York Declaration, signed by 142 countries, calling for the release of captives, stabilization of Gaza, dissolution of Hamas, and recognition of Israel and Palestine. He urged remaining countries to support it and stressed the need for a political solution guaranteeing everlasting peace.

Colombia
Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused the UNGA of being a "mute witness" to the genocide in Gaza, where more than 60,000 people have been killed. He urged member states to bypass repeated UN Security Council vetoes and take binding action through the UNGA.

"Diplomacy has been tried in Gaza," said Petro, warning that each day "more children die, more bombs fall, more bodies are destroyed".
