Why Vietnam Revised Its Visa-Free Policy for Indonesians

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian citizens traveling to Vietnam will soon face tighter entry limits following an update to Hanoi's immigration rules. Beginning July 15, 2026, the maximum duration for visa-free visits granted to Indonesian ordinary passport holders will drop from 30 days to just 14 days.

According to an advisory issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi, this shorter grace period is reserved for social calls and leisure travel. "Indonesian ordinary passport holders are now eligible for visa-free entry for up to 14 days only, for tourism and family visits," the embassy announced via its official Instagram on Monday, July 6, 2026.

The policy revision reverses standard practices published just a year prior. As reported by Migrant Times, on June 30, 2025, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs circulated an official immigration schedule that kept Indonesia on par with Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, all of which enjoyed a month-long stay exemption. In contrast, Philippine passport holders were granted a 21-day window.

Under the revised framework, quick vacations or family reunions spanning under two weeks require no prior immigration paperwork. However, travelers are cautioned that the 14-day window begins on the arrival date. Exceeding this timeline without authorization risks penalties, such as fines, deportation, or entry bans.

Furthermore, the embassy clarified that any travel extending past the two-week mark, alongside all non-leisure trips such as business, employment, or academic pursuits, requires a pre-approved entry permit before boarding.

To accommodate longer stays, travelers can utilize Vietnam’s digital immigration infrastructure. The VisasUpdate reported that the country's official e-visa system permits online applications for stays lasting up to 90 days, offering both single-entry options for US$25 and multiple-entry privileges for US$50.

This new policy arrives as Vietnam's tourism sees significant growth. According to Vietnam News Agency, the country welcomed nearly 12.3 million global travelers in the first half of 2026, with June alone accounting for roughly 1.7 million arrivals.

China and South Korea continued to dominate the industry as the largest source markets, contributing 2.7 million and 2.16 million visitors, respectively, to make up about 40 percent of total arrivals. Although Indonesia did not rank among the largest markets,  the archipelago remained part of a rising Southeast Asian segment, with arrivals up 26.5 percent during the first six months of the year.
