TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The FIFA World Cup final will feature its first-ever halftime show, bringing a Super Bowl-style entertainment segment to football's biggest stage. The addition has sparked questions from fans, especially about how long the break will last and whether it will affect the flow of the match.
According to The Athletic, citing AOL, multiple sources reported that FIFA is planning a 20-minute halftime ceremony. The planned duration exceeds the 15-minute halftime limit set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), unless the referee approves an exception.
Several UK media outlets have reported that broadcasters are preparing for a longer break of around 30 minutes to accommodate the performance and their usual halftime analysis. The interval could be extended further if the show runs for 20 minutes or more.
FIFA initially planned an 11-minute performance, but the show has reportedly expanded as more artists joined the lineup. Coldplay’s Chris Martin is curating the performance, featuring headliners including Madonna, Shakira, BTS, and Justin Bieber.
FIFA has also announced performances from Burna Boy and acclaimed conductor Gustavo Dudamel. The PS22 Chorus, a student choir from Staten Island, will perform alongside Coldplay, while characters from “Sesame Street” and “The Muppets” are expected to make appearances.
Although the expanded halftime show may appeal to audiences familiar with major U.S. sports entertainment, some international football fans have criticized the move, viewing it as part of FIFA’s effort to “Americanize” the sport.
