TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese President Xi Jinping greeted US President Donald Trump at the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday, May 14, at around 10 a.m. local time.
Upon Trump's arrival, Xi waited on the steps of the Great Hall of the People until Trump emerged from the presidential car, "The Beast," and then shook hands with him.
The two then introduced their respective delegations. From China, Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Secretariat Cai Qi, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Defense Minister Dong Jun, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, Chairperson of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Zheng Shanjie, and other high-profile officials were in attendance.
From the US, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla and SpaceX), Ryan McInerney (CEO of Visa), Jensen Huang (CEO of NVIDIA), Tim Cook (CEO of Visa), and others were also in attendance.
The two heads of state then took the podium, after which a military band played the national anthems of China and the US.
A 21-gun salute was then fired in Tiananmen Square. Presidents Xi and Trump then inspected the People's Liberation Army honor guard and watched the military parade.
At the end of the parade, Xi and Trump were greeted by dozens of children jumping with flowers and Chinese and US flags, shouting "Welcome" in Mandarin.
After the ceremony, Xi and Trump briefly spoke on the steps, with Xi pointing to Tiananmen Square, directly in front of the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People.
In a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for China-US relations.
Afterward, the two entered the Great Hall of the People to begin bilateral talks.
"We welcome President Trump’s state visit to China. During the visit, the two heads of state will have an in-depth exchange of views on major issues concerning China-U.S. relations and world peace and development," Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.
China, Guo Jiakun said, is ready to work with the US to expand cooperation and manage differences in the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit, and bring more stability and certainty to a changing and turbulent world.
