TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has welcomed Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung's plant to issue regional bonds, expressing readiness to dispatch a financial team to share expertise with the Jakarta administration.
The commitment came during a bilateral meeting between the two city leaders at Civic Hall in New York on Sunday, September 20.
"I am very enthusiastic about and supportive of Jakarta’s plan to issue municipal bonds," Mamdani said in an official statement as reported by Antara on Monday. "New York has also used bonds to finance infrastructure development, including waste treatment facilities and various public facilities."
He reaffirmed that City Hall stands ready to deploy a financial advisory team to work alongside the Jakarta Provincial Government.
We are ready to send a finance team to share our experience with the Jakarta Provincial Administration regarding the preparations and process for issuing municipal bonds," Mamdani said.
During the meeting, Governor Pramono also outlined Jakarta's strategies to tackle chronic traffic congestion and expand public transit networks.
Key initiatives include the expansion of the TransJabodetabek intercity transit network, designed to boost connectivity between Jakarta and its satellite cities while curbing reliance on private vehicles.
Pramono further highlighted that Jakarta offers free public transit for 15 designated demographic groups, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and students enrolled in the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) and Jakarta Excellent Student Card (KJMU) assistance programs.
The governor also detailed Jakarta's ongoing flood mitigation measures, which combine infrastructure upgrades, stricter groundwater abstraction controls to slow land subsidence, and the development of a giant sea wall.
The bilateral dialogue offered a platform for Jakarta and New York to exchange insights into managing urban growth and establish pathways for structured municipal cooperation.
