TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Lunar New Year is one of Hong Kong’s largest and most vibrant celebrations. Streets across the city are decorated with lanterns, tangerine plants, and red-and-gold adornments, while cultural events and traditions welcome the Year of the Horse.

For travelers visiting Hong Kong during the holiday, these are the must-see events and festive experiences:

Fireworks Display

One of the highlights of the Lunar New Year is the fireworks show across Victoria Harbour. This year’s theme, “Prosperity Gallops Across Hong Kong,” promises a spectacular 23-minute display on February 18, starting at 08:00 PM local time, according to Travel and Leisure Asia.

Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade

On Lunar New Year’s Eve, February 17, travelers can enjoy a colorful parade featuring themed floats and performances by local and international groups.

The parade runs from 08:00 PM to 09:45 PM, starting at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza and winding through Canton Road, Haiphong Road, and Nathan Road. Pre-parade festivities begin at 06:00 PM, including street parties, magic shows, and live music.

Flower Markets

Leading up to the New Year, streets are filled with people carrying bouquets of colorful flowers. Popular destinations include the Prince Edward Flower Market and Victoria Park, which also feature large floral installations and interactive booths. Flowers are believed to bring luck for the year ahead.

Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree Festival

A centuries-old tradition, the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree Festival in Tai Po invites visitors to write their wishes on paper and tie them to mandarin oranges—a symbol of luck.

If the wishes hang high and remain on the tree, they are believed to come true. The festival also features luxury food stalls, live music, and carnival attractions.

Horse Racing at Sha Tin

On the third day of the Lunar New Year, the Sha Tin Racecourse hosts its annual horse racing event. Visitors can enjoy the races alongside lion dances and other performances, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Lanterns and Flowers at Lee Tung Avenue

Lee Tung Avenue in Wan Chai is transformed with more than 800 traditional lanterns suspended above tree-lined streets. Complementing the sea of red and gold, Central Piazza features a vibrant flower garden, creating a picturesque backdrop for the holiday.

Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year celebrations combine centuries-old traditions with modern festivities, offering travelers an immersive and colorful experience of the city’s culture.
