TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck East Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi, on Wednesday morning, January 29, 2025, at 7:50:43 Jakarta time. This event marks the 125th earthquake in a series of tremors that have been occurring in the region since January 24, 2025, beginning with a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
“The M5.1 earthquake that occurred this morning was the 125th earthquake,” stated Daryono, Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, in a written statement on Wednesday.
The quake, which coincided with the celebration of Chinese New Year, originated at a depth of 10 kilometers with its epicenter located 15 kilometers southwest of East Kolaka. The coordinates of the event were 4.06 degrees South Latitude and 121.80 degrees East Longitude.
Daryono explained that this was a shallow quake caused by the activity of an active fault. The analysis of the quake's source mechanism revealed a downward movement mechanism, known as a normal fault. “The modeling results show that this quake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami,” he confirmed.
The tremors were felt strongly in the East Kolaka area with an intensity scale of IV-V MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity). The vibrations were felt by almost all residents, and many people were awake. In the Kolaka area, the intensity was IV MMI, meaning the vibrations were felt by many people in their homes during the day.
The quake was also felt in Kendari, Konawe, and South Konawe with an intensity scale of III MMI, where the vibrations were clearly perceptible, similar to the feeling of a truck passing by.
Daryono urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. "Check and ensure that the building where you live is earthquake-resistant or that there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that could compromise the building's stability before returning to the house,” he advised.
