TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Kingdom and ASEAN launched a Nature-based Solutions for climate mitigation portfolio on February 2, 2026, reflecting both parties' shared goal to promote a cleaner and greener region.

Implemented under the ASEAN-UK Green Transition Fund (GTF), the portfolio showcased the UK's commitment to support Southeast Asian countries to achieve climate mitigation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development across the region.

Speaking at the event, UK Ambassador to ASEAN Helen Fazey reiterated the UK's commitment to supporting ASEAN's green transition. "Through the ASEANUK Green Transition Fund, we are investing in the policies, expertise, and innovations that help governments, communities, and investors scale highintegrity Naturebased Solutions," she said, as quoted from a press release received by Tempo on Sunday, February 6, 2025.

"Our partnership is built on trust, shared ambition, and a belief that nature can be one of ASEAN’s greatest assets in the journey to net zero," she added.

Southeast Asia, having the unique position of vulnerability against climate change and being home to rich forests, mangroves, and peatlands that serve as vital carbon sinks, positions ASEAN at the front of advancing the nature-based solutions.

Investing in nature-based solutions is essential to sustainable development, as managing natural ecosystems offers solutions to address environmental challenges while delivering benefits for communities and nature alike.

The portfolio is expected to provide targeted technical assistance to ASEAN member states across key workstreams, including strengthening regional policy and international collaboration, improving Nature-based solutions, unlocking scalable investment, supporting forest restoration, and enhancing ASEAN conservation.

The event also marked the official unveiling of the ASEAN-UK GTF Nature-based Solutions for Climate Mitigation portfolio booklet, which outlines the five workstreams and their collective contribution towards ASEAN’s regional climate ambitions.

Meanwhile, the Philippines is the current ASEAN Chair of the ASEAN One Billion Trees Initiative. It concluded with a demonstration of the MyFarmTrees platform by Alliance Bioversity–CIAT, showcasing how the digital tool supports transparent tracking of restoration activities and strengthens community livelihoods.
