TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Researchers in Australia have developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system to monitor the condition of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland in real time. The system was designed by the University of South Australia (UniSA) in collaboration with scientists from Queensland and Victoria.

The AI platform combines data from photos, videos, satellite imagery and ocean sensors. Using machine learning, the data will be analysed and displayed on a central dashboard to provide a comprehensive picture of the reef’s condition.

The Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been severely damaged by bleaching events since 2016. A population explosion of crown-of-thorns starfish and coastal development have worsened its condition. Globally, 75 per cent of coral reefs have experienced extreme heat stress in the past two years due to the climate crisis and ocean warming.

The system will integrate data from agencies including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) and Australia’s CSIRO. Scientists believe the platform could be a valuable tool in coral reef conservation efforts.

“We currently have models that analyze coral reef health data, including bleaching rates, disease incidence, juvenile coral density, and reef fish abundance. However, this data is not integrated and is still scattered,” said Abdullahi Chowdhury, UniSA data analyst and lead researcher on the study published in the journal Electronics, quoted from The Engineer, Sunday, February 16, 2025.

“As a result, it is difficult to get a big picture of coral reef health or conduct large-scale analysis in real time.”

The system allows monitoring of coral bleaching rates, crown-of-thorns starfish populations, disease outbreaks, and juvenile coral survival. In addition, the abundance and diversity of reef fish will also be monitored more accurately.

“By integrating all this data in real time, we can produce predictive models that will help conservation efforts, allowing for earlier intervention,” said Musfera Jahan, a PhD candidate at Central Queensland University who is an expert in geographic information systems (GIS).

“Our coral reefs are dying very rapidly due to climate change, not just in Australia, but all over the world. So we need to take serious action now.”
